Reapplying and letters of rec?

I want to ask one of my professor to resend my letter of rec this year since I know him pretty well. When should I notify him that I'm reapplying (Now or when the application opens)?

Also I only applied to two schools last year (didn't have my degree yet), but am planning to apply to a whole bunch of schools this year. Would using the same LOR be a problem for those new schools I apply to?

I actually requested a letter of recommendation recently from one of the professor that I asked last year. What I did was just update him about my current status of dental school, and if he is willing to write me another letter of recommendation. I mentioned that he does not need to rewrite a whole new one, but to update my recent accomplishment since I applied.
