is it ok to ask referees for personal copies of recommendation letters for your own records? or is this frowned upon...i was just taught in careers class back in high school that you should create a portfolio of such letters...

In general I think this is frowned upon. If they offer, then by all means, but my opinion is that unsolicited requests for your own copy would be outright temerity.
