I recently received the Navy HPSP scholarship and am excited about that. I was still thinking about apply for the NHSC but I am unsure if I will be able to back out of HPSP if I get accepted NHSC. Anyone know if it possible to forgo the HPSP if I do get accepted for the NHSC? I am unsure of if you can back out of HPSP before you ever accept any money. Just barely started looking into these options and any input would be very helpful. Also when does NHSC notify those that receive the scholarship? I saw that they announce them by September 30 at the latest, but I start school mid July.

Thanks!

You can still backout of HPSP before you go in and accept your commission, I believe.

You can ask in the military forum. Those guys will know.

Everything is set in stone once you're commissioned ( swear-in).

Because your school starts in July, the Navy will try to get you commissioned before that. That might be in June or even as early as this month (depending on when your recruiter finalizes everything). As soon as you commissioned, you are contracted with the Navy. This means that before even schools starts, you already can't back out without penalty. Likewise, you can't receive payment for school unless you're commissioned (which is why this will happen likely before July).

I suggest that you be straight with your recruiter. Ask him when he thinks you will get commissioned.

p.s: congratulation on your scholarship!
