I've been working as a groomer for over three and a half years now, and I am planning on asking my boss to give me a recommendation. Grooming is much more health-savvy than most people think and i have learned an incredible amount about handling small animals, about a lot of health-related stuff, dealing with clients, etc etc. My boss was a vet tech for 30 years or so, so I pick up a lot from her.

I'm afraid if i ask her for a recommendation letter she might be a bit lost as to what to write. What generally makes a good recommendation letter? Is there a particular form? Just so i can give her an idea...

Thanks 🙂

Proper spelling

But all joking aside, one member of the faculty were I go to school makes all students who seek a LOR from him to submit a self letter of recommendation. That is much harder then it appears, as most people are pretty modest, especially when they have to put it down in words and give it to a professor.

In the end, his letters are by far the best I have ever read. They are glowing endorsments and show individuality. I think its neat he makes students do some of the leg work themselves.

I'd approach your boss, and ask for a LOR, and offer, if needed, to write a draft.

mmmm yeah i just saw the typo. Whoops 😛

I'll try that. i guess I should start with a list of what I learned and form that into more of an essay form.

Out of curiosity where are you applying that you need a LOR this late in the game?

By late in the game do you mean late in the year or late in general? I'm actually still an undergrad, full-time student. I have been working as a groomer on the side for the last 3+ years. I'm technically a senior right now, but I'm staying in school for another year because i decided to do a double major with Biology to add more science classes to my transcript. Honestly, I'm quite behind, I still have to get all of my stuff together.

By late in the game I meant LOR's for this application cycle were due a month ago for US schools.

But it sounds like you will be applying next summer to sratrt in Fall 2010.

Yeah, I think it's a matter of being a little early rather than late in the game. 😉

As far as getting a letter from a groomer/vet tech - I would make sure that the requirements from the schools you're applying to aren't specific about the people they want letters from. Some of them specify that you need x number of veterinarians or x number of professors or such, and some strongly recommend against non-vet/non-academic letters. I'm not saying like DON'T DO IT but I think you should at least look into it first.
