Just wondering....

Has anyone done this before?
Ie. on top of the required # of recommendation letter

In my situation, I am considering asking a letter from one of my PIs whom I have worked with over the past 2 years on program development (I am scheduled to do an elective with him but lottery system ****ed me over and that elective will happen after the deadline for the residency program). He's a MD director in charge of a couple primary care programs (and obviously I am applying to one of those). Do you think it's appropriate?

I mean, I have no clinical experience with him before....... (not until after the deadline)

"A good letter is a good letter". I think that a strong letter from a PI with whom you have worked and who can vouch for your work ethic, productivity, ability to work with others, etc. would be an asset. You implied that this letter would be in addition to the "required" letters (which will be from clinical experiences, chair or clerkship director letters, etc.). Nothing wrong with having 4 letters instead of 3, provided that there seems to be a reason for the additional letter.
