Recommendations on a good clinical program

I'm looking for advice on programs in the NE, SE, or Midwest that are strong in their clinical teaching. I don't really want to focus on research as much. It sounds like a lot of the "top tier" programs expect you to pump out papers... is that true? Are they also as stong in their clinical teaching? I appreciate any input.

I have a similar question about the Chicago programs in particular. Though I don't mind the research part at all, because I am interested in a fellowship opportunities after the residency training. How difficult is it to get a spot in ObGyn residency in Chicago in general and which programs are better in terms of reputation, training, options for getting into fellowships after residency training?

In terms of not doing a lot of research and getting good ObGyn training - I've heard U of Minneapolis is a very good program.

Yes, I keep checking this post and no reply at all - come on - there are 12 ObGyn programs in Chicago - nobody has a clue about them or people just don't want other people to know about them or the programs suck so much that the residents there are so overworked that don't have a second to reply??? The mystery of Chicago ObGyn programs!

If you pause for a minute, you'd see that this board is generally dead. As much as a few of us keep trying to revive it, it's nothing against you in particular. I don't think there are a ton of residents who read this site, based on the posts I've seen. So don't take it personally.

This link (which is from a threat only about halfway down the main page - Post Your Interview Experiences) gives some of our impressions of programs from our interviews. It is mainly Northeast, but also some Cali programs. It should help you out somewhat.

I'm sorry if no one provided an answer for your post, however this is not one of the "busier" rooms on this forum. I try to occassionally drop my 2 cents worth, but trust me, finding time to peruse the forum during residency outside of time for reading, family, and rest is hard.

Anyhow, getting to your question. There are several programs that I know of (first hand) or have heard of from friends that are strong clinically, where "research" is not necessarily a significant point of emphasis.

Starting with DC, MD:

Georgetown, especially while at Arlington(regardless of the Academic rep)
Washington Hospital Center
Bethesda NNMC
Sinai Hospital (MD)
Charleston Area MC
UF Pensacola (FL)
Bayfront Medical Center (FL)

As far as the Midwest goes, there is an excellent clinical program at Creighton in Omaha (yes, Nebraska). It is a small residency with lots of one on one clinical teaching. It is an academic program with a "community program" feel to it. Their numbers are great and everyone ends up with fantastic clinical training. Definitely worth a look.

It would probably be a good place to do one, especially if you want to stay in the midwest. I suppose it depends what you are looking for in a residency, but everyone I have spoken to about the program absolutely loves it. They treat the residents and med students very well and there are a lot of hands on and one on one teaching.

I've heard good things about the program at Univ. of Minnesota and Iowa. Kansas is suppose to be good too but I haven't heard as much about it. Again, its hard to say because each residency program has different things to offer. For those who don't need to be at a "big name" place, the midwest has some excellent programs in cities where you can actually afford to live and raise a family.

Wash U in St. louis has a very good program. They had a hx of being malignant in the past but I think this has changed. It's one of the better known programs in the midwest. I would do an externship there b/c you'll probably get a Letter of recommendation from someone better known in the field. The Univ of Mo-kansas City has a fairly big program. Dr. Smith is famous, if you could work with him, everyone knows him. Hope this is helpful

Wayne State's program in michigan is on its way back up again...so you may want to check them out as well! The faculty there is AMAZING!
