Okay. I just wanted to make a few recommendations on interview day for those of you in the cycle this year.
1. Student Hosting-- If you have the opportunity, stay with a student host. It will allow you to get a good feel for the school and you can ask any questions- even the ones you would not ask in a formal interview. The students will dish to you-- what they love, what they hate. If you take this opportunity, remember to either take your student out to dinner or bring a gift with you for their house. It can be chinese take-out at $6 per person. Keep in mind that by staying with them, you are saving both the cost of a hotel and getting a ride to the school in the morning (so no taxi), which often exceeds $50 in most places. It is good manners but apparently, not all students are aware of the etiquette behind staying with a student host. Also, either leave or send a thank you card or e-mail to the student. My pre-med committee made all students aware of these "rules" but apparently not all schools provide the same service.
2. Attire-- please do not wear only black and navy blue suits with white shirts. Try expressing a little bit of personality. Conservative suits come in many colors (hunter green, gray, chocolate brown) or if you must wear black or blue, try a more dramatic color shirt (i.e., hot pink, maroon, red, teal, hunter green etc) or a nice scarf/tie.
3. Read interview feedback on SDN and look at the school's web site so you are familar with the school's program.
