Hello everyone,

I just have a question of where I can collect my recommendations and who I can gather them from. Here are my stats: 30mcats, 3.2 undergrad, 3.4 grad, black male (I hear that counts) and tons of volunteer work with kids in the city.

First, what are my chances of getting into a med school?

Second, I have been working full time for a couple of years now. Undergrad was several years ago. Is it ok to collect recommendations from ministers, supervisors and others outside of academia?

Thanks.

Unless you have been out of undergrad for five years or more, you generally cannot substitute other letters for your undergrad letters. You can use them as supplementary evaluations. Your undergrad letters are required.

Where did "5 years or more" come from? The reason I ask is because I've been out of school for 4 years.

Your GPA is a below average, but they will also look at your type of classload, major and other mitigating circumstances, especially if there is an upward trend in your GPA...and there is an improvement in your grad school GPA so that's a good sign. Also you have volunteer work and good MCAT score, I think as long as you crossed your Ts and dotted your i's, apply early and apply to a whole range of schools, you have a good chance of getting in.....

Edit: btw, I am in the work world, and I have two recommendations from school, and two from the work world.....but i'm using my school's premed committee to write me a letter, if you are not, then many schools will specifiy that you send a letter from a science/faculty prof etc. If possible, get in touch with your school and see if they have a premed committee to write you the recommendation.
