Hi everyone!
If you are an applicant from waterloo, I was wondering if you could tell me which prof you asked for a reference letter. I'm currently a first year, thinking of applying for sept 2007, and I'm finding it hard to think of a prof who would write me a letter, especially since the classes are huge and I don't know any of them well. 😕
How would you rate your relationship with the prof before you asked them for a letter? How did you approach them?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. THANKS. 🙂

It wasn't until my third year when I was taking a smaller 4th year bio course that I asked for a letter. I found that professors class to be very intersting and spoke with her on numerous occasions about the material and a book she had recommeded that I promptly started to read. A few months before the letters were due I asked her if i could come to her office to discuss my optometry application, thats when I asked her and handed over all the parts of my application; personal statement, transcripts, etc. While my prof didn't know me all that well when I asked, having a copy of my grades and personal statement helped her understand where i was coming from, why I was applying - and allowed her to write a very supportive letter.

If you're looking for someone to right now though - I would probably suggest Dr. Bols...he's easily approached and always a friendly guy. Even though I don't think I knew him very well, during my final exam he came to my table and started chatting with me....which was kinda weird, but nice nonetheless. Anyways...thats just my Dr. Bols anecdote.

Good Luck!

Dr. Bols is awesome 🙂 I did my 499 honors project with him and I'm working with him right now. Best supervisor hands down. 👍

You should know him well first, before asking him. From what I remember seeing and hearing from other people in the lab, if you don't know him well, don't expect a stunning letter. He's a very busy guy to catch too! 😀

Mungo Marsden is an awesome prof, easy to talk to, and he likes doing the assessment forms. You'll probably encounter him in Histology.
