Hello! I had an interview on Dec 31st for a summer intership position at a hospital. They told me it will take about 1 month to know their decision. I am curious why it would take that long? My references were not called in the past week. Is it a bad sign? How long does it usually take for them to contact references? Any input would be appreciated!!! Thank you!🙂

Some places never actually check your references. If you think about it, it's pretty pointless.

But funny story, I once had an interview where I had only put down one reference on my application. During the interview she asked me for a second reference, so I gave her my boss at CVS. After the interview once I got home, I called my CVS boss to let him know that I had listed him as a reference. The interviewer had already called and spoke with him! I was quite impressed with her speed.

Cool story bro.

The one time I know of where an employer (and not just in pharmacy) called my personal references, turned out to be a job so bad, I briefly considered surrendering my license.

Hospitals will for sure call your references for real pharmacists positions. I am not sure about internships.

Thank you for the inputs!!
The interviewers told me the HR will contact the references of successful applicants for sure....Just I don't know when they will call...Maybe I am not considered for the position already🙁

Hospitals work notoriously slow. My hospital took 2 months from the day that I applied to the date I actually started. Oh, and there was not a single applicant that applied for the same job as me. I was the only applicant.

So waiting a month is really no big deal

True. But last Sunday, I half-heartedly filled out an application for a hospital in a nearby city, and to my complete surprise got a call from HR the next morning! The interview was Wednesday, and I suspect they'll make their decision pretty soon; the chief pharmacist said they want this position filled ASAP. I feel very good about it, in part because this hospital does something very few hospitals do and I have experience in it. Part of the delay is that they tend to start all their people at once, because of orientation classes.

I'm not crazy about the idea of moving again, but that's gonna be part of the territory. Friday, I had an appointment with my lawyer and it turns out he represents a company in that town and is familiar with it, and told me about some things there that I might not have learned about on my own, and added that he's seeing an average of 3 people a week from my former employer who have been discharged for the same unethical but not quite illegal reasons I was. And those are just the people who are coming to him.

Isn't there always the possibility that they're still interviewing during that window they gave you? They might start calling references after the last interview, perhaps?
I think I was interviewed on the last day of their interview period...Anyone has some idea as to when the HR usually starts to do reference check? Thanks!

Do employers check the references you list under the references section or do they contact previous employers as references? Or both?

wow. I feel like hospitals are like cliques. Especially since there are high percentages of women. And I'm not trying to be sexist at all but if you get a bunch of women together, the whole cattiness goes up. I don't know how this relates to your experience. It may be completely unrelated. Anyways, a new job is better then dealing with drama.

I got to get in with the cool kids, ya know.

How could anyone take that as sexist?

Well, they asked for a list of references....They are my previous employers...I guess they only call ppl I listed if they call at all. Lol

I never really had any jobs in pharmacy, so I listed my preceptors as my references instead of my previous employers since they weren't related to pharmacy. I didn't list my current pharmacy employer because I don't want them to find out I'm looking for another job.

Just got the job offer today! Yay, so happy!! Thank you guys for your reply!🙂

An all-female work environment is the worst of all, and it doesn't matter if it's a pharmacy, office, pizza place, etc. You men cannot fully understand this, because if you throw a man into the mix, the dynamic completely changes. Yep, all that estrogen can turn the place into a big PMS-fueled catfight. And if you think good old boys' clubs are bad news, good old girls' clubs are even worse.

With the 3 references I listed, only 1 was with a local number and that was the only one they called. But it was weird because they offered me the job before they checked it. I don't know what was the purpose of checking it after I had already started doing orientation. I think they had to do it for documentation reason maybe?
