Hello everyone!

I have a bit of a dilemma, and I wasn't sure of where to go to get my questions answered... Basically, I am applying to Waterloo Optometry this summer for September 2012 and I still need a letter of recommendation from a professor. The one I was going to use (when I thought I was going to get at least 80 in the course) doesn't seem like a good option to me anymore. He is a philosophy professor and I felt that he got to know me really well, considering the small class-size and my actual need for help with essay courses. I ended up with a 75, which is my only mark so far below an 80 in university, and I want to know if I should reconsider choosing a professor based on doing better in their class (aka, a science professor). The other problem is that the reference letter is due by the end of November 2011...

Any help is greatly appreciated! I would like to use my philosophy professor, but I don't know if Waterloo will frown upon me using the prof of the class I did the most poorly in.

Thanks!
Tina

Um, I don't think they care what your grade was with that professor. I think people suggest getting a LOR from a prof's course that you did well in is so that they having something nice to say in their letter. If there is no other prof that can write a better letter, I don't see a problem.

Go for it. I rather have a letter that speaks about my character than one that speaks little about who I am aside from numbers. Plus, 75 is not that bad? I personally had a professor write me a letter (which was awesome 😀), and i only got an 84 in his class, which is probably my lowest science grade. Like your situation, he is the prof that knows me the best.

Hi everyone, for academic references, is it okay if the instructor doesn't have a phd? I know an instructor with a M.Sc. really well and I did well in the course.

Yes, this is acceptable, I worked with a girl who got accepted using a letter from an instructor who only had a B.Sc.

Thanks! I just got worried because some schools want a letter from a professor for the academic reference.
