Hey guys,

I am sure all of us have volunteered, conducted research, or have sought admission to a certain organization. But, in order to do all this, we need references from people outside our family that are aware of our work skills. So, I do not know many people to ask for a reference but there is one in particular who I worked with over the Summer at a non-profit organization. Would it be appropriate to ask her to be a reference for multiple organizations? I hate to keep asking her over and over if she could be a reference. Of course, once I get involved with other organizations I can then meet new people and ask them in the future, but at this time she is my only hope. Thoughts? Thanks!

No its not appropriate, its awkward if you get an interview, and its hurdle when trying to get accepted. Volunteer somewhere else for two weeks and just ask for ref from someone else.

There's no need for any references, no one asks for them. The only thing you need are Letters of Recommendation and those have to come from professors. Only one letter can come from non-faculty, this is policy of most schools.

I wouldnt worry about this at all nor would I even spend time on this. Focus on building rapport with your profs in order to get good letters of rec later.

i realize that it is better to get letters of recommendation. but the references are for volunteer programs which I am trying to get involved in.

Either find one that doesn't need references or you will have to ask the person for multiple letters. Both are not a huge deal.
