Is it frowned upon to reference alumni you work with in secondaries? I work with them on a daily basis and they can all attest to my work ethic and values, but I didn't get letters from each of them since I felt like that might have been a tad excessive...

Not at all. It helps even more if you get a LOR from said alumni.
