So, I already did a 3rd year anesthesia rotation. Have my 4th year scheduled for next month at another hospital system from my home program.

I have the opportunity to shadow a really important attending at my home program (since I mainly stayed with the residents on my previous rotation and didn't really "schmooze" enough with the key attendings).

**This guy is the regional guy at the program, and he said we'll be doing "mostly regional anesthetic for orthopedic cases".

O.k., now I know that the type of block will depend on the procedure, but can anyone give me a heads up on some general reading of some "common" regional blocks for ortho procedures??

I have "baby" Miller, and will definitely be perusing through that in anticipation as well. I'm shadowing on two occassions with the end goal of a LOR, which he already knows I'm looking for. So, I want to make a good impression. The first is this Monday, so any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Show up early.
After 1-2 days, u should know where things are at. Get everything ready for the first/next block(stimucath, mepivicaine, syrnges, us). I used to prep 3-4 emesis basins in the am with the appropriate equipment for the following blox to expedite things.
Have your attendings/residents gloves ready.
Know the anatomy.
Know the therapeutic doses.
Know the toxic doses.
Know the dose of lipid rescue.
Know the dermatomal coverage of each block, and maybe the nerve roots involved for an extra punch.
Help out with other things if needed. (put in orders, do the H&P, prep the site, etc...)
Don't be in a rush to leave early.

These things will show how serious u are about anesthesia, get u on the attendings good side, and teach u the basics of what u need for regional.

Kick ass advice.

Like to add:
Look at the surgery schedule the day before so you can anticipate the types of blocks they will be doing. Read up on those, in particular, so when the time comes...you shine.
