I just received an e-mail from Indiana saying:

A special panel of our Admissions Committee reviewed your application and has concluded that, at this time, your application is not competitive for our limited number of interview appointments. Consequently, we have withdrawn your application from further consideration for the entering class of 2011.

I am SO bummed right now... and just lost a LOT OF CONFIDENCE... which is not good since my DAT is on Thursday 🙁

Does anyone have any idea why this may be? My DAT scores are not in yet and all of my letters are in but not all mailed out yet... my application is not even complete...

Is it bc my GPA is 3.43? (tons of ECs and planned on acing the DAT)...or perhaps bc I'm International...

I hope this is not forshadowing my chances this cycle 🙁!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would call the school and very politely ask why your application was rejected. Maybe they do not know you are taking the DAT.

Best of luck. Just focus on your upcoming DAT. Don't let one school ruin your chances at all the other ones you applied to.

hmm i didn't apply to indiana so i dun know for sure, but perhaps they have a minimum gpa?

you could always call..

by the way, what was your science gpa? was your PS decent with no grammatical errors?

Is this your first time taking your DAT or did they already have DAT scores on file for you? I would definitely call or email b/c they are very responsive and straight-forward and will actually tell you what was lacking in your application.

Yeah...
My Science GPA is 3.40, Non-Science 3.67, Overall 3.43... My PS was definately decent and no grammar errors... I just got my last letter in yesterday and I was hoping the DAT would help my GPA
ahh...! super stressed now... and EXTRA pressure to perform well!

This is my 1st DAT...
I just e-mailed now...hopefully they reply...!!

What was your DAT score or is this the first time you are writing it ?
Do you have all the prerequisite courses ?

This is just one school so don't let it get you down. You only need one to give you a chance to showcase yourself and that is it.

Send them an email, ask for explanation and then focus on the DAT.

Finishing up pre-reqs this year... I entered these courses as inprogress/planned... This is my first time writing the DAT... Okay I'm going to have to pretend this never happened and maintain focus on the DAT...

Exactly, stay away from this site for next two days 🙂 and just focus on one thing : DAT exam.

I haven't heard of anybody being rejected with no DAT on file before... And a 3.43 doesn't sound like it would be under a cut-off. I thought they didn't even review until your application was complete. Anyway, RELAX. Focus on your DAT. Calling would be a good idea also as previous poster suggested. I recently read a thread where somebody was put back into consideration at case because they were rejected before their retake (which presumably they had informed the school of beforehand). I'm not sure if its a possibility in your case but I hope everything works out. I know it hurts to be shot down before you feel like you've even taken off but in the long run its ONE school and you still have a chance! Now get ready to rock the DAT =)

This is just my opinion but I think not having your pre-reqs complete may have made you slightly uncompetitive. Your GPA is fine but I wonder if the admissions committe weighs in heavily on the grades you got in your pre-reqs...just a thought..

This is true... but my coursework was heavily bio based...a lot of anatomy and physiology and human biological sciences... I only have a few non-science credits... But yes physics, english and specifically required courses I am in the process of taking... On my app only bios and chems were on there so far... I guess we will find out if he e-mails me back :xf:...

I know it sounds very unlikely, but is there any possibility that one of your evaluators wrote a bad LOR about you? We can't see the letters, but I thought normally the evaluators will let you know whether they will write you a good one or not.

Anyway, best of luck for your DAT!

He responded and pretty much to summarize: everything looks impressive except my BCP GPA is not competitive given the applicant pool

So guys I am wondering now... how important is BCP GPA compared to Science...

Im concerned since my BCP GPA only has 5 courses in it (still need biochem, orgo, physics pre reqs to be added in academic update)

Will schools realize that only a few courses are making up that gpa... and give me a chance by looking at my DAT science scores

🙁

I think which one is more heavily considered depends on the school... I hope most look at sGPA over BCP too because my BCP isn't too amazing. 🙁

My PS was definately decent and no grammar errors...

Hmmmm.....are you sure?

I'm just kidding. I really do feel for you! I have also never heard of someone being rejected without having taken the DAT. Also, my BCP is a 3.45 and I have a mid September interview to IN...

This all just doesn't make sense. I wonder if you maybe did have a poor LOR. I'm sorry... Just keep your head up and use this as motivation to ROCK the DAT. They may be losing a very good dental student! 😉

i think it's mostly because you're an international student. i think their website states they have a preference for in-state and being international decreases your chances even more 🙁

also, you are missing quite a few pre-reqs still...orgo, biochem and physics?

dont stress out too much though! you can still own that DAT 🙂 and receive interviews from more international-friendly schools

Even though your BCP GPA may not be horrible, the fact that you only have 5 courses did not help you out. Dental schools like to see that you have taken upper level sciences in addition to the required courses, so taking a heavier science courseload may be in your best interest.

I spoke with them and they said that there is no exceptions to the 3.3 gpa cutoff

I really don't like schools having minimum GPA cutoff...

That's why I HATE Canadian d-schools only care about GPA not DAT.

I think it might be because they have already started to hand out interviews and have received a fair pool of students, so they have now implemented the cutoff. My guess, so might not be the case.

Like, there are already a lot to sift through, now it is the time to set up a cut-off :x

Yes, I know, I am in a science-based program so all of my courses except for ~4 are science and make up my science GPA
BUT they but do not count as bios since they are in the dept. of kinesiology of the science faculty... so all of my anatomy, physiology courses are OTHER SCIENCE and not BCP... bio, chem, physics etc are my elective courses...
also American pre reqs differ (I'm Canadian) and so I wasnt planning on taking biochem/english but now will have to in the fall... I didnt meant to take all the pre-reqs late but it turned out this way...!

HOw did they get your application without a DAT score?

Well that pretty much sucks...but don't let one rejection get you down. Just do well on your DAT and stay optimistic.

There's too many posts to read, so excuese me if I'm repeating someone else. You need to call the school for sure. Don't settle for a voice mailbox. This is your future we're talking about. Be proactive and let them know you haven't even taken the DAT yet. Your GPA is fine. Good luck:luck:

It's probably because you're international. There aren't many spots for out of state students let alone international students.

what was your bcp gpa?
try contacting them again after you write your DAT because maybe they rejected you because they didnt see a DAT score so there was nothing to compensate for a slightly lower bcp gpa?
either way.. just concentrate on your DAT and good luck! 🙂

I thought anatomy and physiology are counted into the BCP gpa :help:

Ur gpa is fine. Focus on the DAT for now. It's only one school. I have had to apply 3 times prior to this so dont let little things get you down. Kill the DAT and stay focused. Ull be fine.
