Hey, just wondering how many of you have been rejected by the school(s) in your home state but accepted to a school out of state (public or private, but guessing public is more rare). I've seen happen alot with the Californians but just wondering if anybody else has experienced this.

Im from texas (which is supposed to be "easier" comparatively speaking), got 2 MD interviews in my home state didn't get into either. But got 3 out of state and got into 1 (which was a public school, go figure). Just wondering how many people have experienced something similar. How did it make you feel? I mean, I'm thrilled about going to allo med school but still a tad bitter bout the rejections from my home state. I have to hand over ALOT more coin now for tuition and be away from fam and friends. But still thrilled like I said, but there still is that tad bit of bitterness. Would love to hear from some others who maybe experienced this, regardless of what state your from

I'll tell you whether or not I receive love from TX schools after my cycle is done. 😉

After looking at your MDapps, I'm pretty sure this question won't apply to you..haha

Hook em' fellow UT alum here

Yeah, I've got a similar situation, except for the only love I got was from Texas! Go figure! 😛

I was happy about it because I wanted to get out to a different place, and Texas tuition is cheaper than in-state for me anyway. Again, go figure. It's kind of sad that my home state didn't like me, but oh well. They are really weird about it anyway. Pretty much all of my friends had to go out of state as well, so I would have been the odd one out to stay.

Congrats on the acceptance, piston! and longhorn, you've got it in the bag! Best!

I'm from CA, so I guess my situation is not unusual, but i only got one in-state interview and I'm going to an expensive, private East Coast med school. I thought I would do better in terms of the UC's and I kind of wish that I applied to USC, because I might have gotten in and paid the same amount of money but stay in CA

A friend of mine was waitlisted at his state schools and got into an out-of-state public school. Dunno how that happens, but it did.

Happened to me too. I got two in-state interviews, still waitlisted at one. Here is the funny part about mine, I got straight out rejected post interview from my state school that is generally considered easier to get into and waitlisted at the harder one. Then got an OOS public school acceptance. The system makes no sense sometimes.

yes, I was rejected by one state school (well, UMich, which isn't really a 'state school' in the traditional sense) and waitlisted at the other two, but accepted OOS at Illinois - my wallet is not happy about this, but alas.

I'm from NY, I applied to all of the NY schools - 12 in total I think.

Interviews at 3 state schools, and 1 private - rejections from the remaining 8.

Accepted to 2 of the state schools. I also got some accepts out of state.

I definitely feel you in the wallet part, thats pretty much my biggest beef. Texas is dirt cheap for residents, but now im looking at 200k of debt...but it is what it is

I'm from CO and was rejected by CU but got into Ohio State and 3 OOS private schools. Not getting into my state school didn't make much sense to me, but in the end I'm absolutely thrilled about the school I'm going to.

It pays to apply broadly.

Sometimes getting into a state med-school is just as hard as it is to get into a private med-school. Most state med-schools take ~90% instate students, and there are a lot of instate appilcants. Private med-schools need their slots filled; therefore, they take students from accross the nation, many of whom come from states with only one public med-school.

I think that summarizes the experiences of most Californians. I got more love as OOS at non CA state schools(esp TX, OH, FL, and NY) than I did from the UCs. Im curious if any CA residents did better with the UCs than with the nonCA private and public schools.

I think its strange that you didn't get in Tx schools with how people talk about how they are easier to get into then oos schools.

Yea, tell me about it, I would venture to say that I may be one of the only people (maybe ever) to get in out of state but not get in TX as a TX resident... I am indian (asian indian) though, so maybe theres some more fluctuation being an ORM....also it seems like TX puts a huge premium on applying very early (I'm talking like may/june). I was more of a July/August applicant after I took the July mcat, so maybe that had something to do with it.

Pre-interview rejection from UMD.
Accepted off the WL at Miami and Pitt.

Not even an interview from my state school!

Oh I'm hoping this doesn't happen to me. I'd like to stay in state to be near my boyfriend. And once he's a local resident, I'm hoping he'll be able to get into school near me as well.

I didn't get into any of the schools in my home state (I applied to 3 of 6 MD schools) but I was accepted to 2 OOS private schools. I say F*** your home state. That's sort of what I think about mine, at least lol

TO BATMAN: where are you going next year? I know you had a pretty good cycle.

Don't sweat it...Its basically out of your control right now and you've done all that you can already. Anyways, Im no expert, but after looking at your MDapps I think you should be able to stay or go wherever you want

Unless I get off UCLA/UCSD waitlists(very unlikely by now), UTSW.
