Ugh, my first post-interview rejection was from Upstate today. I totally liked them and thought it was an excellent school and was really hoping to get accepted. Today comes the letter saying ' we basically have too many qualified people blah blah blah ...'

Have some people called them up and asked why the rejection after an interview? I would have thought that once you get to the interview, then you're at least a viable candidate. Was it something I said? or did? was my handshake too firm? too weak? It's hard to know if it's worth it to ask them.

I have an acceptance that I got after my first interview - whew! It was so great to be liked and accepted so soon, but I guess I was hoping to have other acceptances as well and maybe try for a state tuition instead of private.

Is this year more difficult than any other year from the economy, or am I just getting crushed like everyone else here???

well it's not neccessarily your interview. Sometimes the people who review your file are different from the people who make the final decisions. Maybe the final decision makers saw some concerns that the inital file reviewers didn't care/see

At the same time, I think of granting interview as giving you the benefits of doubt. It doesn't neccessarily mean that you're good enough to be admitted, but decent enough for consideration.

When I interviewed, Jen Welch said she would meet with applicants rejected post-interview. Maybe you could call or email them and see if they'd tell you what happened, or how to strenghen your application .

Regardless congratulations on your other acceptance .

They're not go to interview you if they don't think you're a strong enough candidate. Your interview is your chance to sell yourself.

I think sometimes if you are a borderline applicant and still manage to get an interview you can still get rejected. Think about it... the person who interviewed you might not be on the admissions committee and although they gave you a good review, someone on the committee might not like your other stats and reject you.

I have friends who went to interviews, had a pretty good experience but were nevertheless either waitlisted (and ultimately rejected) or rejected outright. It does happen.... a guy I know got interviews in all 5 Ontario med schools and despite stellar stats only got into 1. He was rejected from the others... so yeah it does happen...

However, Woolie Congrats on your acceptance.... focus on that, perhaps you are destined to go to that school, perhaps its fate. But heck you got in and thats amazing... because every school in the US (and Canada) is extreemly competitive & prestigious, regardless of national 'reputation' or 'rank'.

Once again, Congrats

Woolie, SUNY Upstate is pretty good with giving feedback, ie why you got rejected. Call and schedule an appt if you want to know.

Thanks for the responses guys. After I posted I felt like: that was a really wimpy thread - I mean, everyone here is getting rejections so I am not too special.

I guess I was just having a self pity moment +pity+ and had to blab about it here on the forum. I didn't mean to sound like a total whiny wuss ...

Woolie,

When did you interview at Upstate?
