Hello ophtho friends... I recently have heard people saying that if you apply to too many away rotations in VSAS and get accepted to rotate at multiple programs that having to say no to a program is essentially blacklisting yourself for an interview from them down the road. Has this been true for anyone??

It sounds like a game of risk... apply to enough programs so you can get accepted but not too many. I also have no idea how competitive it is to secure an away rotation at either a mid-tier or upper-tier program (assuming hundreds of applicants for 3-4 spots a month?)... I guess I can't say, I really have no idea. Any thoughts would be great. Thanks.

I turned down an away from a place and still got an interview.

I also interviewed somewhere where I rejected an away. Most programs are barely even involved in the process of accepting and scheduling students for rotations. This is usually done by the registrar. I bet most programs will have no idea if you rejected an away by them.

I rejected an away, and ended up matching to that program. I think the idea you are "black listed" at a program you reject is just one of the many myths that tend to run on this forum........

This is very true. The coordinator usually has nothing to do with setting up the rotation. It is usually the student affairs office that does this. Once they have accepted you and you have confirmed then your contact info is given to coordinator. This is how it worked at my 3 rotations.
