I meant post-interview, not rejections in general.My rejection letter last year from UCLA says other wise.
I can see them informing people they've been waitlisted via phone call. Relatively small group and subsequently informing that small group its now closed as everyone paid their last deposits.
But they get some 1800 applicants, calling all 1700 or so people is just way too time consuming. They can automate the snail mail process.
Personally I was surprise they didn't go the email route. Practically no additional cost. They already pay for the computers/internet/IT and those related expenses.
No postage to deal with. Even at bulk rate. Saves on ink and paper/envelopes.

Adcoms already have a tough time doing their required tasks. No need to train adcoms in suicide prevention techniques after they tell the applicants the bad news.
