from reading the LUCOM thread, apparently interviewees receive a phone call from admissions- not just those accepted but also those waitlisted or rejected informing them of their status. I think this is kind of weird, I personally would never want to find out by phone. Do any other schools do this?

I wouldn't mind rejection by phone call if the school told me that they let you know by phone beforehand. At least once the phone call is over you know your fate, you're no longer sitting around hoping for a call.

Personally I think the way VCOM rejected me was my least favorite way to do it. Most schools tell you a date and if you don't get a phone call on that date or the next, you can expect a rejection email a few days later. VCOM told me the ADCOM will meet sometime in the next 3-4 weeks (one of the weeks was fall break) and would then call people who were accepted. Since I didn't know when the adcom was meeting, I had no idea of when I might get called and just randomly getting an email saying I was rejected wasn't fun.

That's kind of a bummer. I think it's better to just be able to check a web site.

Maybe they should start sending out rejections via Twitter.

Like, "@JohnDoe Sorry; you weren't accepted to our medical school. Better luck elsewhere!"

But seriously folks, getting rejected from one or more schools was simply a part of the med school application process for the vast majority of current medical students and physicians.

I applied to quite a few schools (14 DO, 5 MD), so I knew going into the application process that I would get a few rejections. What I have found generally true in my situation is that my acceptances came through phone call and email, while the rejections are sent via postal service (snail mail).

I think rejections should go through email unless they ate willing to discuss your weak points and how to improve.

Which they should at least try to do if you ask nicely. DID YOU HEAR THAT, WAYNE STATE??

Not that I particularly wanted to live in Detroit anyways.

So I'm guessing that even if you call and ask, email, or write a letter, about why you were rejected, they probably won't inform you?

Some schools will let you make an appointment with a counselor and they will call you back. Others will never contact you no matter how hard you try. It's best to just call/email and ask if you can speak with someone.

But from my experience, its going to be generic advice like, "mcat could be higher, gpa could be better" and chances are that if you were rejected you know if your gpa/mcat was below avg. They might tell you to get more shadowing/volunteering if you're lacking but don't expect anything beyond that. I wasn't able to get any feedback on my PS/secondary either.

I'm not sure if DO schools are more willing to talk to you or not. But all of the DO admissions people I've spoken with have been very willing to help. I don't know if that's because they have less apps to go through or because DO>MD.

No school followed through with detailing weaknesses in the app post rejection.

I was advised in an application post-mortem that something was terribly wrong w my committee letter & to stop using it. I'll never know what it said or who it was about (b/c I was not someone who should have had a bad letter), but that advice changed my next application cycle tremendously, and I strongly recommend seeking application post mortems if you feel an unsuccessful cycle cannot be explained by gpa, mcat, etc.

Yes, or they will give you a bull**** reason. For example, Marian said they rejected me because of my body language. I asked them if the could give a specific (e.g. seeming aloof, nervous, etc.). They said "just google body language. We can't give you more than that." I suspect it was because of the way I answered one module/mmi scenario. I met 2 others here that answered similarly and got rejected outright as well.

Yea LU did the same thing with me. They did discuss why they rejected my application and said basically since I have been out of school for too long they are rejecting my application. They also said if I take some post-bac classes and applied again, they might accept me.

that's weird. I would think they could give a better response, or something more general like "we just have a large number of qualified applicants and although we liked your application, we feel others were a better fit for us."
