Rejections

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Whos getting them already?

I got one today from a Hospital in PA. Made me sad all day long 🙁

I didn't even realize you actually got rejected! I just thought you never received an interview....now I don't want to check my email again, every hour on the hour.

🙁 i gues its just me right now.

Chin up, still early. I've not received any, but I KNOW they will soon be coming. I get the feeling nothing will truly prepare me for a rejection email, however.

It's not uncommon to get some rejections. If you're nervous, just apply to a few more programs. 🙂

They're already rejecting people this early in the game??? What hospital is this? Is this UPenn? I can't imagine that they would reject people. IM's not that competitive as it is. Are you an IMG?

Per post hx, it looks like the OP is an IMG applying for FM. Which makes it interesting, to say the least.

There are a couple of VERY competitive FM programs in PA that will immediately refuse to interview FMGs/IMGs/DOs. (Penn is not one of those, by the way.) So it does not surprise me that the OP already has a rejection, even in FM.

 That's awesome.

I guess it's always best to research the program before applying.
Smq, now I'm very curious as to which program(s) in PA are like this - not applying to FM, but this must be some hot program to reject even DOs.

Odd. FP and PM&R have hardcore type-DO blood, even at ivies.
Plus PA has probably one of the best respected, well-established DO schools (PCOM) with generations of DO's practicing in the state. Maybe FP and all primary care fields are just getting more competitive?

Yeah, I just glanced through the list - nothing stands out to me as being a huge big time program except the usuals and I know the usuals take DOs since they do so in non-primary care fields, as well. Weird.

Jefferson does not, as far as I am aware, interview DOs for their FP program. It is probably the most competitive FP program in Philadelphia, more so than Penn. They have a well known department - their chairman was president of the American Cancer Society, in the NY Times, etc.

This is obviously department dependent. There are plenty of DOs at Jeff, mostly in anesthesia and EM.

Smq - out of curiosity - I failed to add in a program when I first sent out my applications on Sept. 1 ... I just added it now, is this considered "too late" or when it's received on Tuesday would it be considered within the normal time-frame and be okay?

just to clarify, it was a community IM program. I did research it and I def passed the requirenments, so I'm not sure why I was rejected.

I've applied to both IM and FM. I dont mind either since I will most likely do Primary care, but I applied to IM more because I may want to specialize.

I am IMG.

Thanks for those who gave supporting words.

It is most definitely not "too late." "Late" is generally considered after October or November. You'll be fine. 🙂

I am very sorry to hear that. For one thing, do not take it personally. Second, if you have the stomach for it, you can certainly always email the program director and ask why you were rejected so soon. I think that all applicants have the right to know, especially when it happens so quickly.

Good luck!!

Are you asking if your application received on the third business day after applications are allowed to be sent is "okay"?

C'mon, a majority of folks are not applying yet. At our school, about a third haven't even opened ERAS. You're well ahead of the game...

Yeah yeah yeah --> I am being neurotic, I know, just SUPER NERVOUS about the whole process ... this thread did NOT help

Thanks smq/notdoneyet!

Don't be discouraged!!! Some programs don't say it, but they just don't interview IMGs. I would email the PD and ask why. It can only help you with further applications. ERAS/NRMP is not a 100 m race - more like a marathon. People who lead early in the game do not always win it, so just cheer up and go for it, while learning along the way.

Good luck!!!

SDN is contraindicated for the super nervous. You get a collective neurotic vibe on this site that just makes the fearful more fearful....

Seriously, with FM being as uncompetitive as it is, you would figure that these programs aren't in a position to reject anybody. We need primary care physicians and I say we train all the IMGs we can get just as long as they can speak proper English.

Well, some programs are more competitive than others. And the decision as to whether or not to interview and FMG/IMG is up to the individual program. If your program, regardless of the specialty, is so competitive that you're being flooded with applications, then you have to find *some* way to weed them out. And if your program is competitive enough that you fill pretty much ever single year, rarely need to scramble, then you could argue that your weed out process is not a big deal.

The need for PCPs would be better addressed by increasing the number of residency spots, not by forcing ALL programs to interview all-comers.

thanks for being sweet, i think i will email them to ask, if anything just to understand why, maybe it was a mistake on my part even!

ya it didnt say that on their website, they actually had information for IMG's, but im not sure how many IMGs they actually have, that was probably the case. I applied to a lot of programs and I know Ill be getting tons of rejections, I just didnt expect them so soon.

😳

I never trust a program's "Application Requirements" section for IMG eligibility. Most programs are being politically correct by even offering IMG requirements. The best tell-tale, in my opinion, is to click on the "Meet Our Residents"/"Our Housestaff"/etc link and see how many IMGs they actually have in their program. If I see a program like Yale that has about 1 in each PGY class, I assume each one of those IMGs has 10 publications and practiced in their home country, so I know my chances are low. If I see a program that has zero IMGs, like Stanford for example, then I know I'm not gonna even throw away cash applying there.

ya, i did check for how many IMGs programs had for almost all my programs, i think this one didnt have that.

oh well, life will go on.

nothing in my inbox since last friday.

so hard to just wait.

yeah i didn't realize that either. Its good though in a way, so you don't wait around forever thinking about whether or not they still want you to interview.
