I am throwing this out there to see what the opinions of other SDNers are, or if anyone has first hand experience that they would like to share. I'll try to be as clear as possible.
On the VMCAS, classes are to be entered as they appear on the transcript. At my institution, when a class is repeated, the previous attempts are marked with an 'E' and are not included in any GPA calcuations. It is the same as someone who attends a school that simply removes the previous attempt from the transcript (they do exist), except that at my school it still appears on the transcripts (with coding). I contacted VMCAS and asked them how a student from a school that shows a class but does not include it in the GPA can compete with a student from a school that removes the class from the transcript. Their answer was, "They can't. We have no way to account for that." They suggested that I enter the classes as coded. I don't have a problem with this, but I don't want to be nailed for perceived dishonesty.
I guess I'm frustrated because when my transcript is reviewed, the schools don't take the time to read the coding key on the back. So I am penalized, where the student from a school that removes previous attempts from their records is not. Has anyone dealt with this issue? How did you handle it? Any thoughts, ideas, etc.? Thanks.
