hi folks! I've got a question about repeating a course and how this is calculated into your GPA. i have heard mixed info about this. how is this done? which grade counts?

Here's what I've been told.

When applying to osteopathic schools, the most recent grade for the course is the one they count. That is not the case when applying to MD schools, they count all grades. I'm not sure how the Texas application system does it.

the last poster was correct- osteo takes higher and allo averages the two.

my advise, as someone who had a heck of a time w/science courses early on, is NOT to retake unless you got a D or F;
you won't really impress anyone with an A in intro bio if you got a C the first time around- you'll be expected to earn an A b/c you've already done it and anything else could be the nail in the coffin for an ad comm.
if you pulled about a C or better take more advanced courses, work hard- really hard- and prove you're better than your past mistakes/shtcomings and you can rise to the challenge.
i'm far from infallible, but i'm writing as somone who went from 2.5 to 3.8 sci gpa and will be starting at nycom this fall (GOD willing).

best of luck in your journey

hi, in continuing with this thread, i was wondering about my personal situation. I have ALREADY graduated with my BSEE. I have a 3.16gpa and a 3.25 sci-gpa. If i were to take additional undergrad classes in hopes of fullfilling basic premed requirements. what would it do to my gpa/sci-gpa?? increase(assuming i do well) or stay the same?

thanks!

This is how the DO schools bump up their average GPA so that it appears they have numbers comparable to MD schools.
Oh... Here we go.
You know, only when applying to MD schools does ANY school average the grade points of repeated courses. In the entirety of academia, except Allopathy, the higher grade counts. This is how Allopathy maintains their one dimensional selection criteria. 😛
