I was the recipient of HSCP for PA school. While this helped me support my family during school, I still have significant loans from attending a private school. I want to go back to med school and was wondering if anyone knew if I would be denied HPSP/HSCP (I know HSCP is navy only) through my current or different branch since I've already received it once?

What are your goals? Do you plan on being in the military for a 20+ year career? Do you plan on getting out immediately after the HPSP/HSCP commitment if you are accepted? These are questions that would guide my answer.

If you plan on staying in career, consider USUHS - full pay&allowances (save pay for base pay if you are above O1, O1 BAH, BAS), $0 tuition - 7 yr commitment (not including time in residency, see other threads for more details).

If you don't plan on going full career (and I think this is what addresses your question), talk with a recruiter. I asked my recruiter's office about going directly to med school on HPSP right after PharmD school with HSCP - was told that it would have been fine, granted I received acceptance to the medical school. Obviously you could still go career with one of these, but in my eyes USUHS is the best option for a military doc who plans on going career.

Thanks! I do plan on doing career, but didn't want to rely on only USUHS. I asked my old recruiter and he say he didn't see why not, but hadn't seen it done before.

I'm waiting for my obligation time to be up. Are you saying you can go to med school on HPSP right after PharmD HSCP BEFORE completing your obligation time? I'm sure that the obligation time isn't eliminated, rather postponed, but it would be great if I could apply now and not wait until my obligation is completed. Wouldn't command have to authorize?

Some sort of authorization would need to be obtained - are you in your final year of PA school? I was told that I could go from one school to the next, then serve the obligations sequentially. Didn't have anything in writing, just an email from my recruiting office secretary (but she is very knowledgeable on these things and has been doing it a long time).

As someone who's done it before (academy to med school on HPSP), trying to get out of an ADSO, even if it's to pursue a program that will incur an additional ADSO, is extremely difficult. It's rare for HRC to see something like that, so they don't know how to deal with it; it's rare for S-1 types to know who to talk to to figure out what steps need to be taken, etc. You're right, command would have to authorize the basic involuntary resignation, but most of the decision is at a much higher level, and takes forever. It's much simpler (from my understanding) to go to USUHS, as you don't have to go from active to reserve, but rather you're going from active to active, meaning that it's a simple unit change rather than a status change. Plus, since I'm assuming you're Navy, the HPSP+GMO, your most likely route, would work out to about the same time as an HPSP ADSO anyways.
