Be prepared to see some faculty members (who to this date you considered reasonable), to become completely unhinged and yell at each other or at you. M&Ms are occasions where fault lines through departments became apparent and old scores are settled. This has nothing to do with you or your patient and you shouldn't take it personally. People who got slighted at a M&M 12 years ago will try to go after your attending for some minor detail which 'clearly led to this bad outcome and reflects poorly on this department'. The theme of this fight might vary by specialty:
- bicarb no bicarb
- lido no lido
- What, you didn't do a triple-sowed McClusky anastomosis ?
- glue, who in his right mind would use glue ?
....the intensity of the argument is the same. Unless you have a reasonable person of authority chair the M&M (e.g. the chairman), these things can get a bit unproductive and nasty in a hurry.
