Hello,

I am currently a Biomedical Engineering major interested in applying to optometry schools. I was looking at a list of undergraduate courses recommended for optometry school and saw that among them were microbiology and psychology. I haven't taken these courses and they are not required by my major. I have however taken other courses such as biochemistry, nanotechnology, orgo 1 and 2, gen chem 1 and 2, physics 1 and 2, bio 1 and 2, human physiology 1 and 2, social sciences, cyber-psychology, and many BME related courses. I just wanted to know how important microbiology and psychology are in terms of applying to schools and if it would be worth my time to take these courses?

You will have to check the prerequisite requirements at the schools you are applying to. Most schools require both psychology and microbiology, so you would have to take them.
You can always call and ask if any of the other classes you've taken could replace those requirements.

My advisor doesn't know much about equivalent courses for BME and optometry programs. Is it possible to still apply even if i don't take microbiology and it's listed as required. I would have to move a lot of things around to fit that in my schedule and it may require an extra semester. Would it be overlooked if I have a a great GPA, OAT, and overall resume

Yes you can still apply. The most likely situation is that, if a school wants to accept you but you haven't completed all the prerequisites as listed, you will be conditionally accepted. Then you will have to complete the course (before the 2015 school year starts if you are applying for this cycle). Maybe taking the course in the summer could be an option?
