i am sending them in when they're asked for, of course, but i can't help but wonder...

is there any possible use of a picture sent in before an interview that isn't discriminatory (by race or especially by cuteness), even if it's at an unconscious level?

Yes - it can help them remember who you are when they are going over your file again after the interview.

I don't see why they would use it to discriminate. They already know your gender and ethnicity from your application, so what difference would it make (unless you are incredibly ugly or something, or overweight but that is another thread).

Every school I have gone to has wanted a photo, sometimes beforehand or sometimes the day of. Some schools would just rather have you send it to them beforehand so it is already ready.

i also think they use it just to identify you for interviews.
in one of the ones i went to, you're in this big room with ~40 other interviewees and your interviewer comes into the room holding a sheet with your name and your picture on it and looks for you/calls out your name.

like what goal oriented said already - they already have all your biographical info etc.

they like to collect photos of young virile applicants because people on ad coms get very very lonely sometimes ....

I'm having some regrets about the picture I used, but maybe I'm being paranoid. It shows about two inches of my shoulders, and I'm wearing spagetti straps. Is this too casual?
