Hey everyone!

So I am an OMS-I. I am really interested in getting involved in some research in my current specialty of interest (ob/gyn). My school has some research projects going on, but there are a ton of MD schools nearby with a much greater amount of funding & history in research. Do you all have an advice about doing research at my own school vs trying to get involved in research in another local hospital/university?

Also - if anyone has any experience with trying to get involved with research outside your home schoo, how did you go about getting in touch with the PIs and getting them to let you help out?

Thanks so much!
(and happy almost thanksgiving! :soexcited:)

I tried reaching to the MD schools around our city. Maybe I was emailing them too early (I think most want to see if you will even survive the first few blocks of med school) so I didn't get a response.

In terms of how I did it, I just emailed them with a CV? I have heard of others asking classmates who graduate from the undergrad inst to reach out to someone on faculty they know so that they can try and use that connection to reach out.

We just recruited some PIs with active R01's here and fortunately its in an area I am interested in so I'll be conducting research at our home inst.

Most DO schools are research-weak; so if you have opportunities at other nearby schools, by all means go for it!!! Ad an example, MUCOM students have access to IU, IUPUI, the IU Ca Center, and Riley and Methodist Hospitals in Indy.

MUCOM is an example of how a DO school should be set up.

Thank you! I will do some research to find local researchers at the other hospitals and med schools in my area and send them an email regarding my interest with my CV.

I just wasn't sure how receptive MD schools would be to taking outside med students or even how to get their attention to show them that I am qualified. I guess we'll find out!!
