This is my situation. I was accepted into two summer research programs. One is at the UNMC. If I were to do research here, it would concern microbiological research on thermocellic organisms. This one includes flying to Yellowstone National Park to obtain organisms and bringing them back to the lab for analysis.

The other program I was accepted into is at USC Keck School of Medicine. This one places a stronger emphasis on biomedical research and considering I told them i wanted to do cardiovascular research that is what I am most likely going to be doing.

Both are sponsored by the NIH. Which one should I do to make myself a more competitive applicant? I was told that I should do USC because it is more medical related while others said if i want to stand out go ahead and do the one at UNMC (also the travelling included is more of a memorable experience). Any advice is appreciated!

I would think that both would be fine, whichever one you might be more interested would be the best choice.

Biomedical research FTW

Hey I'm in the same boat. In your situation, I would say for you to go for the USC program. I was accepted into the program and, from the description, it seems to provide greater exposure to medicine, which would be more applicable to your future career--especially considering the clinical component of the Keck program.

Also, to any one who applied to USC's Keck program, did the program wait list anyone? I ask because I have a spot to do research at my home institution in a diabetes lab and I am wavering between choosing that or the USC program. If there are wait listed students, then I would take the position at my university's medical school, so others can have an opportunity to do research, during the summer.

P.S. I'm also a black male, who just finished his sophomore year! 🙂
