Research is a plus but not necessary to get into dental school. Schools care more about your dat and gpa.

personally, from my experience from applying and going for interviews last cycle, I had an impression that admissions value volunteerings more than research. I had 2 years of research with research awards and publication but not even a single question was asked regarding that in any of my interviews. I guess it would depend on the schools but thats just my 2 cents.

also, this again will depend on the schools but usually freshmen can't start doing research because they don't have enough science background. You should still visit the research profs and ask.
