Is it a must to do research? Are schools big on having kids that have assisted in a lot of research or is this not completely necessary?

Thanks

Utes

Research experience is one thing that will always work in your favor. With that said, it depends on the school whether you need it or not. Some schools clearly state they favor applicants with it while others it is not such a big deal. What are the schools that you had in mind?

Well I don't have a really solid list but....
Baylor, Houston, San Antonio, Case Western, Nova, Pitt perhaps more. I'm not appyling this cycle so I don't have a solid list yet. (Plus the wife likes to change her mind everyday as to where she could live and where she couldn't) If you ask me, I'll go anywhere as long as they accept me. I have a TON of volunteer hours, a shakey GPA (3.3) and I figure I'm as well rounded as the next guy.

I've heard that Case loves kids that do research, but that's the only thing I've heard as far as research is involved.

Also, while I'm at it... I've heard 3 letters of rec are best... Should I get 2 science teachers and a dentist? What about a teacher in a different area?

Thanks,
Utes

I think research would boost your chances with the Texas schools, which are very competitive, especially for out-of-staters. I think you'll be fine with Nova and Case. Given your stats and volunteer experience, I would also consider Arizona. They LOVE community service and clinical experience and they have great new facilities - toss that one in as well.

Three LOR's are okay, but I have seen a couple of schools request one from a non-science professor. I would recommend at least two science professors, 1 liberal-arts professor, and 1 from a dentist to round out your letters of recommendation. It is better to have AADSAS forward the extra letters on then to be lacking them and find yourself in a bind.
