When applying for a research job at a hospital via electronic application, do you consider it appropriate to also look up the PI's hospital mailing address and to send him a cover letter and CV in the mail? Does that come off as something good, or something creepy?

I would personally advise against it, you don't know how it'll rub off on them. I'm currently at a research position at a hospital and didn't need to.

Is it a prestigious PI? I didn't even get to meet my PI until about 2-3 weeks after beginning my position... a lot of the time the PI isn't even involved in hiring techs/RA's/etc. You'll probably be supporting post-doc's and attendings working under him, so much of the time it's on them to decide who they want.

Wait until you're asked for a CV. Don't send a letter. It would be weird to do this.
