Hello! I'm scoping out perio programs, and I have 2 questions for those of you who are current/former residents or who are in the know.

(1) I am looking for research-oriented residency programs. I realize the bulk of time is spent in the clinic, but I also know that some departments are more focused on serious research rather than a blow-off MS thesis project (although that depends on the indiv. resident, too). That said, are there any schools to avoid for this reason, or programs that you feel are particularly strong?

(2) My top 2 picks right now are Mayo in Rochester and UIC in Chicago. Anyone have experience with these programs? I'm really curious about the quality of training in the programs. I know UIC is in a growth phase, and the program at Mayo is so small, I haven't been able to find anyone, even in our perio dept. who has experience with a Mayo periodontist.

Thanks - any input is appreciated!

One way you could find this out is to do a pubmed search of the program director and/or chair of the department. If that search yields more than 20 publications on any of these faculty, that program is probably research-heavy and you could expect to receive extensive experience. Based on this rationale (and through my interview experiences), here are a few that I know of (by no means complete)...

Ohio State-Definitely not a joker program when it comes to the research. They require two manuscripts from each resident in order to complete the program.

UNC-I have not visited the program, but I know that Paquette is a big name in the research world.

U of Texas-San Antonio-heavy on research and clinic. Mellonig (ex-director), Cochran (Chair), Mealey (director and co-author of widely used perio/implantology textbook) together have published numerous articles on bone grafting and implants et al. Cochran just visited our school recently and lectured on updates in implantology.

I do not know from experiences, but have heard that most schools in the northeast focus on research. The current program director at our school (Kentucky) graduated from SUNY-Buffalo which is another big research school.

Thanks for the advice! 😀

University of Rochester Eastman Dental Center. Director Jack Caton is (or was??) editor of Journal of Periodontology. He has like 6 labs or something. There's another big clinical research guy there as well. Plus they provide a stipend, and pay for Masters as well I believe.
