Besides the NIH IRTA, are there any other year long research programs for recent college grads? I know that one could simply work for a year in a lab at one's university or elsewhere locally, but I'm specifically interested in official programs, similar to summer research internships for undergrads.

There are a few programs like this http://icahn.mssm.edu/education/gra...post-baccalaureate-research-education-program at different institutions, but they are usually aimed towards minorities underrepresented in science and medicine.

Might I ask why you are looking for something "official"? I am working in a research lab at a university now, but not under any specific program, and I have learned more than I could have possibly imagined.

If you're after research experience, then I would say having some sort of official designation shouldn't matter. It's what you DO there that matters.

Thanks for the link. Not quite what I was looking for, but nonetheless interesting. As for the bolded part, I'm not a URM, so that automatically rules me out.

I guess I should have phrased my question a bit differently. I'm mainly just curious to see if there are official programs out there. I have prior research experience, and I'm exploring options for what could be done during a gap year after I graduate. I definitely agree with what you said and will consider pursuing something similar.

How about this. It was posted by DAPI in the my 2013 thread. Scroll down to the portion that says "Internships in Scientific Research for Post-baccalaureate Students."

http://www.fhcrc.org/content/dam/public/education/internships.pdf

From there, you can Google the programs individually for updates. I am sure that not all of them will be meant for minorities.

Oh, that's excellent. Thanks! The funny thing is, I think I have this PDF on my laptop somewhere, but I never noticed that section.
