My dad is currently a working on a Ph.d in marriage and family therapy and is conducting a few research projects. I have talked to him and would have the opportunity to assist with the research, but I'm unsure of how medical schools would look at research that is done with my father. Would this be a worthwhile usage of my time or should I pursue other types of research? Also is doing research in a field other than Biology (or other Life Sciences) frowned upon?

Thanks

What does the PI say about it? Will this research likely lead to a publication?

What would you be doing? Does it interest you or not? Why would doing research outside of bench science be frowned upon? These are questions that you should answer yourself.

Just an FYI, this wont make or break your application...every applicant has one thing in common, time. It depends on how they use it. If you want to spend time assisting your father's research and it interests you, then do it. If you would rather jump on board with something else, then do that. If you want to play beer pong, do that. Just do something that interests you. There is nothing worse than sitting across from an ADCOM and forcing out a lame response to a research project that bored you to tears. They will see through it, and that is what they will frown upon...
