I am a 3rd year about to enter my fourth year of medical school. I am setting up aways right now and thinking of preparing for the fall process of interviews.

I have, however, been considering another options. Would it look bad in any way after the fourth year of medical school to take a year to do research before going through the match.

I am an overall competitive applicant. Step 1(270+), Junior AOA, one publication submitted while working on more. I have the support of my faculty and expect very strong letters.

Thoughts?

My question would be why? If you're competitive then why postpone a year? Why not apply to a school that offers a research year during residency? I am also going through the process of applying to uro, and I can't imagine that your application would get that much better after 1 year of research. You look very good on paper, probably better than any of the guys at my school that are applying including me. It seems to me, and correct me if I'm wrong, that most program directors look for US seniors in Uro. I guess I just can't figure out why you'd want to put off having an attending salary for another year...

I'm confused by your question. Would it look bad to do research for a year? um, no. Most people use that to strengthen their application.

I' mean dear god man, how was this possibly confusing to you? maybe you should explicate further if you want less bewildered responses.

Well I know most people doing research years do them between their 3rd and 4th year of medical school. I was just thinking that since this is a bit more unusual it might stand out in a bad way especially since my application doesnt really need that much enhancing.

The question is why do you feel it necessary to do a research year? You seem hung up on the research thing. Do you want to be a urologist or a bench scientist? If I were you, I would apply this year, and I would feel confindent that I would match.

Well I am interested in doing a year of research. Do many schools have 1 yr fellowships available to do such things? Who would one contact to find out more about this?

What about a research year if you're a rising M3 with 228 on step 1, one submitted abstract, and one unrelated presentation?
