As a prospective podiatric medical student, I wanted to get the opinions of current 3rd and 4th year students about the current state of affairs in terms of the "residency shortage" and the bits and pieces that go with it. Are any of you current students worried about securing a 3/4 year residency position especially when you're competing against a lot of students who have no business being in podiatric medical school to begin with (i.e. they're not in podiatry because they want to be)? Do you think 5-10 years down the line this crisis will be somewhat assuaged when people like me (going into the class of 2017, 18, or 19) apply for the match? Is it really true that the "work hard = secure a spot" rhetoric has any merit when there have been accounts of 4.0 podiatry students not even being able to secure a spot?

I would be very skeptical of the circumstances around those had a 4.0 but were unable to obtain a residency. There must be extreme situations that aren't being brought up that could contribute to that.

I've been out of the loop regarding keeping up on articles, journals, SDN, etc that update the podiatric residency situation. Have any decisions or strides been made, or are we still looking at the snowball effect growing for at least the next two+ graduating classes?

Anyone chime in who has some solid ideas, please.

Be very skeptical when considering what you hear, there is no organization that has provided reliable numbers, outlook, or solutions regarding the shortage. Proceed with caution.
