Does one's college grades get taken into account when applying for residency? I think I remember someone mentioning that it does. Do PD's request this info directly or does it get reported through ERAS? Reason I ask is that, although I'm matriculating to med school in August, my senior year grades aren't too hot right now. Thanks.

No. College grades don't really factor in. The following are the most important factors:

1. medical school grades/AOA
2. letters of rec
3. USMLE Step I scores
4. where you went to medical school

College grades? Ummm... in a word... NO!

Optho_MudPhud,
So what if your school is P/F? Does that put you at a disadvantage for competitive residencies vs. people who went to schools with grades.

Actually it won't be a disadvantage. Most schools with P/F will usually have a High Honors/Honors/P/F system for the clinical years. Thus, there is a system to still rank the students.

Although Hopkins was ABC... We had the saying that "B" = MD. Most of the class received Bs during the preclinical years. Only 10% received As. Essentially it was a Honors/P/F system.

That was one of the most awesome things about the residency application process...no one asked about my undergrad record (you just put where you went and what degree you got). So my lackluster undergrad GPA that was such a huge obstacle when I applied to med school is no longer an issue!

I did get a secondary applciation from one program, however, that not only asked about undergrad stuff but also wanted my high school SAT scores!!! I crossed that program off my list at that point. Any place that thinks by SAT score from 20 years ago is important is a place I don't want to do residency at. It was only one program that sent a secondary. Everyone else just used the ERAS information.

md03,

Would you mind stating whether this program was at a university? If so, would you say in what region of the country it's located?

do ALL residencies not ask for college grades?

There are SOME that ask for college undergrad grades (I recall a few when I applied for Integrated PRS programs) but most don't so I wouldn't sweat about it...especially now that you can't do anything about it.
