Hello all,

I am trying to find information that ranks residency programs by specialty based on the strength of the program. I want to start research on what are the top to the 'close to the top tier' programs for a few residencies both osteo and allo.
I would appreciate any guidance ...THANKS!

This is difficult to quantify. I haven't seen much on this at all. Some people choose residency by 'brand name' palces. Some by geography. Whatever.

I think most people start out by choosing a specialty. Once this is done, it is much easier to ascertain what is required to become a 'marketable' physician in the field. Again, this depends on where you want to practice (urban/rural) academic or private practice, etc. For example, if you wanted FP and are attracted to rural practice-go anywhere you want! If you prefer academic cardiothoracic surgery, then definitely go to a major university center and bust your butt.

The bottom line is this:Decide what you want your practice to be like, then go talk to people who are in the type of practice you want. They should be able to give you good advice on what it takes to get there.

www.scutwork.com is a good place and SDN as well for eavesdropping or even engaging in discussion regarding which places are 'hot or not' for whatever specialty/program.

My two cents.

I agree. You really have to pick the discipline before ranking the hospitals. Some are great at cardio, some at ortho. Very few (except for the Mayos, Wash Us, etc) are good/great at many residencies.

US News & World report ranks college, medical schools, and hospitals. I wonder why they don't rank residencies? It should be fairly easy to do in a similar fashion as the aforementioned rank lists.

Residencies rankings information does not appeal to the public at large. Many, many a father or mother or some highly motivated individual would be interested in knowing where the top ranked medical schools, etc are located.

(not to mention all the rest of the professional schools.)

I feel the problem with a residency official rankings list is that once you have completed a ACGME approved residency and pass the specialty board that is applicable at this point physicians are so in demand that even someone who does their FP in Podunk,USA is still well qualified to perform those duties in the US. Also, I would say the majority of physician groups in most specialties do not hire or fire based on the name of university or hospital. Even similar for the competitive programs, maybe even more so. Board certidfied radiologist from you-name-it Univ will have no trouble finding work.
However, do not make you residency rank either simply what some joe med student here on SDN says are the 'top' programs either.

I think you must decide what are the most important features of a residency program are the most desirable for you. To me, I wanted a program that could train me to become a competent anesthesiologist that can work wherever based on credentials, volume, knowledgeable faculty, etc. Check. I wanted to stay generally in the South. Check. I needed to become part of a team who shared my ideas and who could train me how to become a perioperative specialist in these days of outpatient surgical clinics and major medical centers as well. Will this program provide me with the knowledge and skills I will need to be a competitive player in this field?
And if making money of concern, that probably is not an altering factor at all.

That is how I think each future physician should view his or her choices
Good discussion!
