Residencies rankings information does not appeal to the public at large. Many, many a father or mother or some highly motivated individual would be interested in knowing where the top ranked medical schools, etc are located.
(not to mention all the rest of the professional schools.)
I feel the problem with a residency official rankings list is that once you have completed a ACGME approved residency and pass the specialty board that is applicable at this point physicians are so in demand that even someone who does their FP in Podunk,USA is still well qualified to perform those duties in the US. Also, I would say the majority of physician groups in most specialties do not hire or fire based on the name of university or hospital. Even similar for the competitive programs, maybe even more so. Board certidfied radiologist from you-name-it Univ will have no trouble finding work.
However, do not make you residency rank either simply what some joe med student here on SDN says are the 'top' programs either.
I think you must decide what are the most important features of a residency program are the most desirable for you. To me, I wanted a program that could train me to become a competent anesthesiologist that can work wherever based on credentials, volume, knowledgeable faculty, etc. Check. I wanted to stay generally in the South. Check. I needed to become part of a team who shared my ideas and who could train me how to become a perioperative specialist in these days of outpatient surgical clinics and major medical centers as well. Will this program provide me with the knowledge and skills I will need to be a competitive player in this field?
And if making money of concern, that probably is not an altering factor at all.
That is how I think each future physician should view his or her choices
Good discussion!
