i know that us news ranks colleges and med schools, but is there any official ranking of residencies by specialty?

US News does rank the best hospitals in each field.

A good approximation is to visit these hospital websites and click on their GME link (they are usually affiliated with various residency programs and some excellent medical schools).

For example, the best hospital for Ophthalmology (2005) is Bascom Palmer Eye Institute which accordingly has one of the top residency and fellowhip programs.
