Has anyone done a residency with an emphasis on teaching? This is something that I am very much interested in because my career focus has changed to an educational setting. Has anyone had any experience with this? Thanks!

Most residencies that are attached to schools of pharmacy often have an educational bent (instead of staffing, you get the honor of TAing). Apparently from the people who are TAing as a resident, they find it more an agonizing chore because of their other duty assignments. Residents do not get relief from other duties, teaching is just one more duty they get. Consequently, the general trend to blow off teaching is alive and well at the U of M. It really shows in the resident's eyes.

However, pharmacy education specialists are generally trained through the MS/PhD route rather than a residency. There are specialty programs (Wisconsin, Iowa, and Washington in particular) that are strong programs in pharmacy education and theory.

Sorry, U of M = Minnesota.

One other thing. Things at Minnesota aren't so bad as to require a union, like our Big 10 neighbors of Wisc and Michigan that have unionized in response to some pretty severe abuses by the professoriate. Residents (aka "Pharmacy School Fellows") and graduate students are treated pretty fairly and paid decent wages here. That doesn't mean I couldn't use a raise!

Why not do an educational focus rotation early one to see if that is something you want to do a residency on?

I'm not comprehending...

A one month teaching rotation during thr Pharm.D. program would hopefully give Caverject an idea of whether or not he wants to spend a full year on a residency after graduation. (I am referring to an actual rotation, not just a TA position.) Does that make sense?

Students at my school can opt to do an educational rotation. I would think South University SOP could be convinced to do the same if such a rotation is not already offered.

I never knew of such an option....granted our class is new and has not gotten to the point yet to talk about our last year rotations, but that is a good idea to explore. Thanks!

I did a teaching rotation during my P4 year, and loved it. I was in about the same boat-thought I'd like teaching, so I was lucky enough to select into a teaching rotation.

Of course, when the Chair of the PharmPractice department tells you to "come back and chat when you're done with residency", you tend to like it a little more. To teach would be the only reason I'd go back to ND, though.

As for unions, here at the VA, Rphs can elect to join AFGE. No comment on unions, though. I'd just get in trouble.
