Is there a residency requirement to complete training to become a dentist? As far as I know, the last 2 or so years at dental school is preparation for going into the actual field. I'm a freshman in college right now and I'd like to get on the right track on becoming a dentist...just wondering how long it'll take...if it takes the same amount of time to become a doc, I might as well work to have an MD after my name, right?

last couple of years of dental school make you a dentist.

if you want to be higher than just a general dentist i.e. a specialist you need on average 3 years of residency.

New york state requires one year AEGD or GPR before licensing, it will go into effect soon or already has. Other states may follow.

And go right ahead, MD's are soooo cool, and dentists aren't.

Good luck in med school.

This law goes into effect in New York starting with the class of 2007.

No, it doesn't take as long as a med school. Dental school is a 2yr career training school, just like a Technical Training Institute, and very easy like community college. 🙄

I can't wait until I get my certificate in dentistry. I'm thinking about going on for an associate's in oral & maxillofacial surgery, and maybe even a bachelor's in craniofacial developmental anomalies.

Guys, why did you spend so much time in school. I got my DDS during a weeklong course on a cruise ship. Got a sedation liscence by listening to books on tape on the way home,Now this OMFS thing is tougher, its a month longer at an all inclusive resort.

But you know deep down I wish I had that MD after my name, it seems to get more chicks, but then again I also would have to pay crazy malpractice premiums, have to put up with managed health, and it takes longer to get a liscence to practice......but that MD after my name would be just so darn cool.

my school's allowing us to choose between a DDS and a DMD. i think i'll choose the DMD so i can have MD after my name, cuz everyone knows dentists are just physician wannabes who couldn't pass o-chem.
i was studying for boards this summer and overheard a law student say that she should have gone to dental school because it's easier. lol.

aero047 should go to med school. after a 2 hour lecture he'll know as much as we do about teeth and he'll have an MD to boot. on the other hand, he'll spend more time in school, his malpractice insurance will be more expensive, he'll be on call and he'll be the insurance companies' bitch. (can i say that?)

Aero,

In case you havent figured it all out yet, MD is not viewed as superior around here.

my dear friend.........you are a classic patient of what my prof refered to as Hand-Foot-in-Mouth Syndrome.....to get the joke you will have to do your D-MD........but then.......you want to be Mr.Cool.......I mean Dr. Cool MD!!!!!!!!!!

I actually had a patient in dental school who thought this was true. She was assigned to me to make her denture, but it was too close to graduation. So I told her "I cant make your dentures because I'm in my 4th year and about to graduate." She said, "you been here 4 years and you STILL ain't graduated?"
