This is embarrassing but my wife (soon to be ex) filed a temporary protective order against me. I could give you details, argue my point of view - and yes, next Thursday I will be going to court to try and get it dropped (if it does not get dropped it will be come permenant and I will have to surrender any firearms, will restrict travel etc).

I know everyone will say hire a lawyer. I understand

However, will this prevent me from being matched by any programs? The order was filed 2/1/10.

It probably won't prevent you from being matched at this point. It might, however, be a problem when it comes time to sign the contract and get a training license (if you are in a state that uses them).

I'm pretty sure you're fine for the match. KEEP THIS TO YOURSELF AND DON'T LET THE PROGRAMS KNOW. The issue hasn't even been dealt with, and the match hasn't even happened yet. I would go to the state medical boards for all the states you're ranking highly and look at the applications. Usually they will ask only about convictions, although in some states, they will ask about arrests and so on. It doesn't sound like you're in either of those categories so you can truthfully answer in the negative about that. Also if you've been fingerprinted, that'll come up as well. However, it shouldn't prevent you from getting a license in all honestly, and starting the program. Now, travel restrictions? If you can't travel to that particular hospital because of the restraining order... that will be a huge problem. So, plan accordingly. Good luck.

IIRC the protective order is a civil matter until someone violates it. Again, AFAIK you can't be "convicted" of anything in a civil court, so as long as you don't violate the order, you should be in the clear.

Get a lawyer and save yourself a lot of (potential) trouble.
