Anedotally, plenty people sit for BCPS with only retail experience.

There’s a requirement that at least 50% of your job involves practice in pharmacotherapy. Historically, this was just a simple check box on the application, based on honor system. Starting in 2019, application for the exam will require some sort of certification from your employer that states your job includes just that - at least 50% in pharmacotherapy. Not sure what the logistics are, but I’m sure more info about this will be available before the 2019 spring exam.
