I'll be graduating this May with a cGPA of roughly 3.02 and a sGPA of 2.88. I plan on retaking Microbiology, Orgo I&II and one more cell physiology class. I also was planning on retaking Chem I&II (B-/C+ respectively). My question is: should I retake the general chemistry or focus on adding a few more upper division sciences. I plan on going to my local 4-year university to apply as an informal post-bacc tomorrow, so I want to get all of my ducks in a row before I enroll for classes.

My main concern is too many retakes without any new upper-div science classes. There aren't many I can add since I'm already a bio major.

Thanks.

EDIT: forgot to clarify that MD vs DO does not matter. In fact, I prefer DO.

Retake will increase your GPAs faster if you are gunning for DO.

That's what I figured. I was just wondering if Adcoms will look more favorably on taking Biochemistry and endocrinology than retaking gen chem 1 and 2.

The most important stuff right now is to get both your s/cGPA to a 3.2+, and the easiest way to do that is by retaking classes...Then you might take a couple upper division science classes to make your transcript look good.

You need to worry about getting them to actually look at your application before you even think about what will look more favorable to them.

Do retakes and then do upper levels.

Have you gotten A's in upper levels thus far? If so, it looks like you have already taken a reasonable amount of them so focus on retaking the general classes probably. If you have been consistently getting B's in lower div and upper div classes it is a harder choice. I would still recommend retaking a few older classes. Add in new upper levels if you can. And by if you can I mean if you can get A's in (nearly) all of them.

Retakes and new upper levels won't help unless you do very well. Someone was right in saying if you can get both GPAs 3.2+ with a good upward trend and a good MCAT (27+) then you should do fine with DO schools if you apply broadly and smartly.
