Just get your DDS/DMD or whatever, and try to maintain a good GPA while in school.
Your part I scoe is pretty good, and from what I know, it will not weigh in as much as your DDS/DMD transcripts will. Further more, you can always apply to all surgery programs, and you might not need to go through the hassle of re-taking part I, and take it from there.
Your dental school transcripts are much much more valuable than a part I score.
However, if you have the time, from now until you start school, and are confident that you can do better than your previous score, I would say GO AHEAD !
Otherwise, just sit back, get some rest after all the good work that got you acceptance in a program !
Good luck !

With a score of 89 it is difficult if not impossible to get into Oral Surgery residency especially the 6 year programs. Of course beside this you need to maintain good GPA, do externship and have some kind of research (may not be in oral surgery) under your wings. In my opinion (and in the opinion of few current residents) Part I NBDE score is once again singlemost important criteria. Also competition is getting tougher every year and who knows what will be the cut off score in 2-3 years. There are several good threads on oral surgical residency under Dental and of late in Dental residency forums. Well you might have seen them already. This year in my knowledge only one person got into a 4 year program with part I score of 89.

I am UK-trained accredited Oral Surgeon. I intend to pursue Oral surgery residency after DDS. Hence I have been researching residency positions all over the country for last 2 years. If you are going to a school talk to the Program Director of Oral surgery program of your school. Another suggestion is to get in touch with few program directors (where they have accepted foreign-trained dentists with DDS/DMD). Two good example are UCSF and Emory. There are several more but you have to start your research now.

And before anything else please retake Part I soon. If it is of any consolation and help I am retaking Part I in April/May although I am starting school in August 2006.

This is my 2 cents. Good luck, :luck:

Hello BIAFRA,
Well, obviously, Rahmed is of more expertise and is more qualified to address that issue than myself. I just wanted to tell you to ignore my advise in that case. My opinion will always be just that ... mine ... might be right, might be worng, but it's still mine. :)
I was just trying to help.
Thanks Rahmed for sharing your experience with us, and for correcting my misunderstandings about those programs.
I was talking based on PEDO programs admission, and thought that it might be relevant.
Anyways, having said that, american DDS/DMD grads also are having a hard tme getting into 4 or 6 (double qualification) programs. It's not a foreign trained issue, nor a Part I score.
BIAFRA, just as Rahmed said, there are plenty valuable threads here on SDN about those kinds of programs ... you can always check them out, and you can always ask american grads too how they are averaging out.

Good luck to you both !

I am retaking Part 1 also because my score is 89, which is not apperantly sufficiet for OMFS. I am Joining UCLA PPID program this summer. Guys coud you help me with this problem. I am MD/DDS from my country, I passed USMLE step 1, 2, Clilical skills.., if I will apply for 6 year programs for OMFS how they will handle me since, I have all usmle done. Should i apply to these programs or not? If someone has any ideas or is in the same situation, please respond. Thanks

hi biafra,
i think you should do your part 1 as soon as is possible NOW before you get faced with all the hassles and pressure when you start your 2 year program. get it out of the way and then you can relax.
hope that helps..
:)

You may get exemption and don't have to do 2 years of Med school. Effectively your program becomes 4 years. My ex-boss (currently oral & maxillofacial surgeon in his country) who had MD/DDS equivalent from his country had to do USMLE steps and California Board. After that he joined 4 years residency program at UCSF (although there program duration is 6 years). I think UCSF currently has a OMFS resident who did her BDS/MBBS + DDS before joining that program. Dr. Anthony Pogrel, Chair at OMFS, UCSF is very helpful to foreign grads. I suggest you e-mail or call him up for further advice.
