so i took the test on aug. 22 and i freaked during the VR...totally bombed it. so i voided the test and am taking it again in two weeks (6th of sept.). because i have used up all the passages and aamc tests i had, i don't have any passages to do for VR except some kaplan passages (in their book, not online). i know i can review my sciences in these two weeks, but what do you guys suggest i do for VR. Should I go over the AAMC VR again?

How do you know you bombed the verbal section if it wasn't scored? Many people think they did awful and come out with 30+ scores.

For more material, I'm not sure if you can get EK 101 in time. If you can, get it because that's the best practice you can buy. If you can't, then your next best bet would be TPR. Both EK and TPR should be better verbal practice then Kaplan. Another problem you may face is that you aren't giving yourself much time to improve your verbal score. Bringing up your verbal score is one of the toughest feats in MCAT prep for most people.

i got so nervous when the section started that i abandoned the EK strategy that I had be using all along to score in the range of 9-11 on the AAMCs. I could feel that I wasn't even guessing on the answers. It was more like 'huh...I don't know what the answer is...i'll just pick one and move on' and the various times i have done on a practice test i have bombed it. thus i think it didn't go well at all. i just need to get over my anxiety about VR. Do you have any suggestions for that?

I have both EK and TPR and the reason I am using Kaplan now is because it's my last resource. In practicing for the 22nd test I used only EK and TPR. That's why I am not sure what I can do in the remaining 10 days.

Maybe if you haven't already done so, try taking the diagnostic exams that test prep companies offer. Definitely don't go by them for score predictions but at least it would give you something to practice.

hey thx for the advice guys...
do you guys have any suggestions for alleviating test anxiety while taking the test. VR is my nemesis and I want to figure out a way to remain calm and go thru the section as I do/did on practice tests. so if you have any advice on this matter i would highly appreciate it.

This advice may seem stupid, but I'll say it anyway. Dont think of verbal as your enemy, think of it as a friend. You need to be happy to do verbal...be excited. Look forward to doing the passages, some of them are actually very interesting. This is what I did on my test, and had no anxiety at all, and verbal was my nemesis also.

I'll give this a shot. So instead of thinking 'omg omg okay so what was this paragraph about, okay so what is this next paragraph about', it should be more like 'oh hmm, let's see what this passage is trying to tell me, (after reading first para.) ahh okay, so this paragraph is about blah blah'...i'll definitely try it out.

also, a lot of people suggest reading different magazines (atlantic, economist), what should i be doing as i am reading an article. since there is nothing to test whether i have understood the article, how do i know what i am doing is right?

also, if anyone has used the EK VR strategy, in the book it mentions that in order to study for verbal, after you have done a test, go back to each passage and without looking over the passage, look over the questions and answers. it should take you 30 mins. minimum otherwise you missed quite a bit. Does anyone do this? If so, did you find it helpful?
