Got a 161 (89th percentile) Math and 158 Verbal (79th percentile) which apparently corresponds to a 770 Math and 580 Verbal on the old scale. 5.0 (87th percentile)on the writing part.

The test was a lot harder than the practice tests ... i'm coming from engineering into psychology and math has always been a strength of mine, but I did a poor job pacing myself and couldn't even finish a few questions. I haven't been in school for 5 years either so i'm a bit rusty with taking tests and was drained by the time i got to the last few sections.

i wouldn't worry about that quant score, its higher than median admitted for pretty much every school I have looked at, which is a decent number of them. the verbal might be a tricker though. i think some school make the first cut based on a total GRE and a 1350 should make every of those cuts. I also understand there are some schools that make the cut based on making a min score in each section, you might have some trouble with those that have the verbal at 600. Just check to make sure what you schools do when you apply.

Hi There,
Thought I would contribute. So Quant 155 (69th), Verbal 166 (97th) Writing 4.5 (72%)

These are some things I noticed:

1. The writing has changed previously you had longer for one essay than the other and now it is just 30 minutes for both essays. As such it seems the percentile ranking has increased because I moved up in percentile with the same 4.5.

2. The computer told me that my Verbal score was between 780-800 roughly when I was finished however I got a 710 last year on the verbal and I was in the 98th percentile anybody else experience such disparity? I think there will be some trouble comparing new scores to old scores I dont care what they claim.

Anyone have an idea of what this score comes out to? I am thinking roughly 1400 total with an even split between the two of them. Thanks all.

There is a chart for score conversion here: http://www.happyschoolsblog.com/revised-new-gre-score-conversion-chart/

According to it, your converted score is 700 V and 700 or 710 Q. Looks like your 1400 estimate was right on!

I ended up with 162 V (630 or 640) and 154 Q (690). I'll take it!

Remember that with the new scores, the test has been re-normed. Part of the reason for the new version is that the percentile rankings have become wacky over the last ten years or so. When I took the test, back in the stone ages (OK, like 2002, back during the fun Analytical section, pre-writing), I got a 640 on verbal and that was the 91st percentile, and a 750 on math which was the 82nd percentile. It's gotten worse ever since, to the point that an 800 in math barely made the 90th percentile with the opposite direction for verbal.

Now the tests have been renormed, so you can expect that a high score for math will have a better percentile ranking than last year, whereas a high score for verbal will have a lower percentile ranking than last year, even for comparable scores.

Same kind of thing happens for IQ tests when a new version comes out; people tend to do "worse" percentile-wise on the new version.

I practiced for three months, every day, beforehand, and am happy with my scores, but felt I would had done better on the old Quant and writing.
170V (99th), 164Q (91st), 4.5 (72nd).
I can't figure out the writing score, except that I felt the time they gave was too short - glad to see someone above said the same. Writing is my strong point in real life and I truly hope the admissions committees don't think I'm a poor writer due to these results.

I'm also concerned about the Psych GRE - I haven't received the score yet but I got around a 700. It's been a while since I took psych classes and the test was much harder than expected.

Great job! Those are great scores. I PMed you for some advice on verbal. I took it and got an estimated score of 162Q and 157V (760,560). The low verbal score worries me. Perhaps I focused too much on math since that was my weakness, but I found the reading comprehension questions rather vague and difficult. 😡

I'm expecting a high writing score which will create an interesting contrast with the low verbal score.

I am a bit worried about my GRE scores causing some schools to trash my application before it ever even crosses my POI's desk.

I got a 155Q and 155V. Both are the 69th percentile.

Good thing I at least have 2 interviews so far.

I have taken the GRE several times and received scores that are all over the map (ranging from 30th percentiles to mid 90s). My latest test scores are in the 90 percentile on one section, but contain a lower score than I have previously obtained on another section. Does anyone know how clinical psych. programs will view this? Will they average out the scores, or just take the highest?😕

Thanks in advance for all of your input.

My actual scores were 162V (640), 157Q (730). Pretty good. Did way better than I thought. I got robbed on writing though, a 4.0 I have a degree in philosophy, so I'm pretty good at analytical writing.I thought I nailed both essays, but I guess not. Frankly, I think the way ETS grades the writing section is a sham. Hopefully PhD programs realize that and don't look much at the writing score.

I took my test on Dec 9th and received my score in the mail on Dec 28th. I was anxious so I ended up calling and paying $12 to get my scores on the 23rd. Seems like ETS makes a lot of money from that service. They could've easily put my score up online since it was already available.

I found the math section to be easier than expected. I used Kaplan's new GRE math workbook, Barron's new GRE flash cards, and Nova GRE math prep book. Though I barely touched the Nova book, I'm sure if I went through the whole thing I would have gotten a 170.

As for verbal, I memorized Barron's essential words book list and still was stumped by a bunch of words. I did many practice tests using the Kaplan new GRE book, which was helpful in getting used to the reading comp. questions.

Out of curiousity, what is the score range for the new GRE? Just curious as I was used to the 800s from back when I applied for graduate school, although I know percentiles are what matters.

No worries, it is much better than my 152Q and 150V. :scared: I took the test in late September and as a result, decided to hold off on applying. I'm hoping to study harder and increase my scores.
