Hello everyone... i had been looking info in the site for a long time but never posted any thread in here..?
About me -.. I am a 22 years old male who came to the united states about 5 years ago. I am a NURSE STUDENT in one of the universities in miami. and i was contemplating the idea to get my RN license start working as a nurse while i take my premed requirements.. I had shadowed Drs in the OR... at children's hospital and i made good connections there. Also, i work for baptist hospital in the ER.... I always have the desire of being a dr but for economic reasons i had to do nursing so i can take care of my mom.. and help her out.

I want to know your thoughts about it?.. do you think is doable? is nursing going to be beneficial for me in some aspects of MD school? I know this has been posted before but i want to know your opinion looking to where i come from... ALSO... if i have my license as a nurse and i had been practicing .. do you think i need RESEARCH experience.. cus here in miami is so hard to find a research program...

thanks please be honest ( want to be a pediatric MD)

Do well in your pre-req's, do well on the mcat, shadow some doctors, do some community service, do something else that you are passionate about, get close to professors and other people who will write you good LOR's and explain thoroughly in your personal statement or secondaries, why you left nursing to become a doctor. Leaving one healthcare field for another often looks bad for reason's that I just don't feel like explaining, but your situation seems more understandable and touching so as long as you make that clear to ADCOM's then I can't see it being a huge issue. If you don't like research then don't do research. And never tell ADCOM's that you only want to be a pediatrician, say that you are interested in pediatrics but are willing and open to exploring other fields of medicine.

Honestly... you r just making me cry right now.. thank you very much god bless you..i will do that and more... i have a good letter of recommendation from the director of bone marrow tranplant in a hospital.. I shadowed and he was impressed by my english and by the way i learned the whole operation the day before ... he was explaining the surgery at his office early that morning and I was finishing the sentences for him.. he is well known in the hospital for his character and bad mood or maybe he is too serious... but he told me that if ever need anything to go to him.. that day he treated me like a med student.. he was asking me questions in the or and the med students were kind of impress too.. so i will keep doing that... thank you 🙂

NOTE .. he is now a professor in a well known med school in florida...

The people in my class who were RNs are doing well. When you're an RN you learn what drugs do, in med school you learn how they do it (and what they do, but if you already know half of it as an RN life should be easier). The anatomy classes you have to take to become an RN help. I imagine clinicals must be easier if you used to be an RN.

A reference letter from him will definitely help you! Make sure that you stay in touch so that when you ask for a reference letter he still remembers you and everything that you did. Also the fact that you're an RN means you won't need much more clinical exposure because you've seen more than the majority of pre-med's ever will before they start medical school so that can help you stand out. Keep browsing around the forums as well, you can get a lot of great information here on what ADCOM's are looking for in applicants. Good luck with everything 🙂

Thank you very much !!!! more info will be welcome... and yes sometimes we email each other... he wants me to be a Hematologist.. so he can give me his office... and for sure i will keep that contact...

On the mid level forum, there is a whole thread made by a nurse who decided to go to med school. NurseyK is her name. Check it out. It started from, I think, her application, but I know she updated through med school and residency. She even talks about her fellow nurses hating on her for joining the "evil doctor" team. It's a good read when you've got time.

Thank you i read some of her threads and very interesting... i wish she can give me some ideas or comments 🙂
