Does anyone know of any sites that match up the readings between the big robins and smaller version or robins (basic path). My school told us to get the basic one but most of the second year students at my school said to go ahead and get the big one.

the school told u to get an abridged version of Robbins? I'd just recommend the big one. It'll be one of those reference books to last you several years (not that u'll use it that often, but often enough).

I would buy the big one. Some of my friends have different opinions, but I love it. Sometimes it can be too detailed, but it does a good job of explaining the pathogenesis and describing the morphology of disease. And maybe the most important difference is that it has pictures, where the baby Robbins doesn't.

Baby Robbins is great too...especially to carry with you around town...like waiting in line to get a haircut.

robbins is also available on-line for free if your school gives you access to MD Consult.

Just get a big Robbins, and bring it to Kinko's to get cut -- they'll take the binding off and three hole punch it for you (cost - $20 or so). Then, you can carry only the part you need with you. Baby Robbins isn't that much more managable than big Robbins, it's just smaller so you can carry it with you... so just make big Robbin's small and you'll be set.

Hi there,
Many of the photos on USMLE came directly from Big Robbins. Actually by really knowing the photos and the captions underneath, you can really get lots of high yield information.

I too, cut my Big Robbins and made it portable. It is well written and pretty easy to manage in small form.

getting the big robbins cut up and hole punched sounds like a great idea, actually. What exactly did you tell the people at the store to do (I know this sounds like an obvious thing, but just to make sure they don't mess it up). Did you just ask them to take the binding and covers off and hole punch everything?

Hi there,
You can cut the front and back covers off (Trauma shears work good for this)but getting the binding off smoothly is best done at the store. Essentially, they cut off the back binding (the glued part). They can punch holes in the remaining loose leafs which you can place in a three-ring binder.

I hope this helps!

Hey guys, thanks for all the advice. I got the big one btw (if anybody actually cared to know).

Is robins really worth reading? It's huge! Mine came in the mail a few months ago and I've yet to open it...... I'd like to have something to read as some of our lectures are terrible and I don't get anyhing other than a bunch of sensing-type details from the scribe.

not worth reading from cover to cover. It is worth reading for any trouble spots.

No kidding! I'm a 100% home schooler now... no books, no notes..... just scribes. My free time is up and my grades are holding, but test blocks are a bit tougher. I seem to be more backed up and I'm not sure if I like the way I'm learning the material...... a bit short term.

My plan (we haven't started our 'organ systems' path yet, just did some general principles and neuropath) is to read only the robbins sections that have correlated emphasis in BRS. So, whatever topics are covered in BRS, i'll read up on those in Robbins as well. From what i've heard from third years, our path notes and lectures are pretty variable in quality, so i'm going to have to do a mix of lectures and readings... sigh. I kind of wish we could just take four months and teach ourselves path, with no tests, maybe just some small groups for discussions and labs and such. It is such a pain to have to essentially prepare in parallel - on the one hand to study class minutia, and on the other hand to prepare for the boards.

*sigh*

If I were you, I'd just focus on BRS path and maybe skim Big Robbins if you're unsure of a topic or want to look at pics. Here's how you should do it: read/memorize BRS path and then do questions out of Robbins Review of Pathology question book. I see all these M2's walking around with Big Robbins but hardly anyone with the question book. The questions in there tend to be difficult but the explanations are awesome. Use it, please!

I used that Q book for the first time on our last test. It's great! I'll probably go pick up a BRS too.

Hey DOCTORSAIB, thanks! I was definetely planning on using the Robbins review of path book for questions, along with WebPath. So you really think that reading the textbook is a waste of time? I feel like you need more than BRS initially to give you some sort of context, background for what you're memorizing. Also, is the information in BRS typically enough to answer the Path review questions? Because BRS doesn't have any of the pictures, etc.

Yeah Robbins Review is a great book to use as you go along....I always waited on reading BRS until just before exams and then went through the chapters at least twice. It seemed to work better that way b/c I had already learned a lot of the material from reading Robbins and our lecture notes (which were extensive).
I don't think Big Robbins was a waste of time at all & I read it from cover to cover minus a few chapters. I read it along with our lecture outlines and added notes as I went. It is very well written and I found the subject matter quite interesting. Oh and definitely look at the pics and captions...as someone else mentioned you may see them again.

We have a scribe service at PCOM so I read/memorize the path lectures from class and incorporate anything that's missing into BRS path (which is not that much). I don't like textbooks. I feel I don't get as much bang for my buck. Review books and lots of questions is my approach and it's been working very well for me so far. I plan on continuing that approach as I set the stage for the boards.

The answer to your 2nd question. Yes, BRS path does have everything you need to answer the questions in Robbins Qbook. Often what's bolded in BRS path will be the correct answer to a question in Robbins Qbook. Try it. You'll see what I'm talking about. G'luck.

I already had Baby Robbins, and we have online access to big Robbins. I may look at BRS Path at the bookstore to see if I need that. I think I have enough resources. 😉
